Dr Tuyet Vu - Founder and Educator
Magic Math Master, maths learning goes far beyond memorising rules β itβs about using logic, creativity, and problem-solving to make sense of real-world situations..Β
Welcome to Magic Math Master β where passion and precision come together to build success in mathematicsΒ
As the founder of Magic Math Master, it is my great pleasure to offer an Australian curriculumβaligned mathematics program designed to help students build confidence, master foundational skills, and reach their full potential. Whether a childβs goal is to catch up at school, extend beyond the classroom, prepare for university, or simply enjoy the beauty of numbers, I am here to support them every step of the way.
Over several decades of teaching, researching, and parenting, Iβve learned that true mathematical understanding goes far beyond memorising formulas. Mathematics is a universal language of logic and creativity. It helps us make decisions, design technology, understand data, and solve complex problems in the real world. People with strong logical thinking and good maths skills often have better opportunities for success, although many other skills also play an important role. I believe every child can appreciate this βmagicβ when it is taught clearly, patiently, and in a way that connects to their life.
π My Teaching and Education Background
My love for teaching began when I was still a student myself. During primary and high school, I often stayed back after class to help my friends understand mathematics. As an undergraduate, I tutored around 15 children in one-to-one and small-group settings. Later, while studying at La Trobe University in Australia, I continued personalised tutoring for five undergraduates and three high school students. After completing my Bachelorβs degree, I still supported a small number of children from friendsβ families, helping them catch up in mathematics and guiding them towards independent study skills, even while I was busy with advanced studies.
Professionally, I have taught mathematics and related subjects in both Vietnam and Australia, across schools and universities, including:
π« Saigon University
π« University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (School of Finance)
π« Dang Khoa High School
π« The International School in Saigon (TIS)
π« Raffles Vietnam
During my PhD at the University of Melbourne, I spent several years teaching large-group tutorials, and shortly after completing my PhD I was invited to be a guest lecturer in applied mathematics at the University of Melbourne.
Altogether, I have taught and tutored students from Prep to Year 12, as well as university students, and I have supervised and mentored over 100 trainee teachers and undergraduates. This experience has given me a deep understanding of how students learn, where they struggle, and what kind of support helps them thrive.
π My formal qualifications include:
π PhD in Electrical Engineering β The University of Melbourne
π Honours Bachelor of Mathematics β La Trobe University
π Master of Science and Technology Education β La Trobe University
π Bachelor of Mathematics and Education β Vietnam
π Bachelor of Arts in English Language β Vietnam
Earlier in my career, I was accepted into a competitive Master of Mathematics program in Vietnam, where I achieved the maximum score in all three entrance mathematics subjects. Shortly afterwards, I was awarded an Asian Development Bank (ADB) Scholarship, which enabled me to move to Australia and complete a Master of Science and Technology Education. This degree has helped me design software tools to support teaching, and it allows me to combine the strengths of both the Vietnamese and Australian education systems. Together with my industry experience, this has shaped a unique teaching approach that guides and supports children in their maths learning and builds a strong foundation for their future career choices.
This combination of mathematics, engineering, and education allows me to design learning experiences that are not only correct and rigorous, but also engaging, age-appropriate, and easy to understand.
π¬ Scientist, Engineer, Researcher β and Inventor of Mathematical Tools
Alongside my teaching, I work as a science and technology professional in Australia.
I am currently a researcher at Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), where I work on:
π°οΈ Space surveillance and satellite tracking
π‘ Signal processing and data fusion
π― Advanced tracking algorithms that can follow many moving objects in noisy, uncertain environments
In my research, I design and implement sophisticated algorithms using random finite set theory, particle filtering, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. These are the kinds of mathematical tools used in modern technologies such as radar, autonomous systems, and space domain awareness.
I have also invented new mathematical performance metrics (such as OSPAMT and COSPA) to evaluate how well tracking algorithms perform. I implement these methods in MATLAB and share my code openly so that other researchers and engineers around the world can use and build on my work. My work on tracking performance metrics has also been positively recognised by leading international experts, including Professor Henk Blom (Netherlands), known for his contributions to the interacting multiple model (IMM) framework, and Dr Erik P. Blasch, a program officer at the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) / Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).
My research has been:
π Published in top-tier international journals and conferences
π Recognised with a Finalist, Best Student Paper award at the International Conference on Information Fusion (Chicago)
π€ Developed in collaboration with leading academics, including Professor Ba-Ngu Vo (Curtin University) and Professor Rob Evans (University of Melbourne)
All of this means that when I teach mathematics, I am not just repeating textbook examples. I am drawing directly from the same mathematical thinking used in real Defence and industry applications β tracking satellites, analysing signals, and making sense of complex data.
π Scholarships and Awards
I am grateful to have received several competitive scholarships and prizes over my academic journey, including:
π Finalist, Best Student Paper, International Conference on Information Fusion (Chicago)
π Prof. C.J. Eliezer Prize in Mathematics, La Trobe University
π Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) β 4 years
π National ICT Australia (NICTA) Scholarships for academic excellence β 4 years
π Asian Development Bank (ADB) Scholarship β 2 years
π Four-year tuition-fee and living-allowance scholarship, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (Bachelor of Mathematics)
These opportunities have reinforced my commitment to excellence, perseverance, and generosity in learning β values that I bring into Magic Math Master.
π― What This Means for Your Child
All of these experiences β as a teacher, scientist, engineer, researcher, mentor, and parent β shape how I design and deliver the Magic Math Master program. As a parent of two primary school children, I understand how important it is for learning to be not only effective, but also enjoyable and confidence-building.
At Magic Math Master, I aim to:
π Make mathematics engaging and meaningful, not dry and abstract
β½ Connect learning to real-world problems (for example, tracking a moving ball in soccer, one of the most popular sports and the sport my sons have been playing for the last four years, planning, coding, or even understanding how satellites move)
π Use storytelling, real-life applications, games, and creative thinking so that children see maths as useful and exciting
π’ Build strong foundations in number, algebra, geometry, and data while also nurturing curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills that industry values
π‘ Help students grow into confident, independent learners who can think logically, explain their reasoning, and enjoy the challenge of a good problem
I firmly believe that every child can find joy in mathematics. With the right guidance, maths can become their superpower β opening doors to future opportunities in science, engineering, technology, finance, and beyond.
Thank you for considering Magic Math Master to be part of your childβs learning journey.
Warm regards,
Dr Tuyet Vu
